Melting, but Accounted For

We are safe and nearly sound here in Houston. We're staying at my parent's house until our stuff arrives in Austin. We arrived at their lake house in Livingston around 5 PM on Saturday and Landon got to take his first swim in something bigger than a bathtub. It was a big hit:

We enjoyed a delicious meal of fajitas and margaritas, and Landon was reunited with the tasty homemade tortilla he enjoyed so much during our Spring Break trip. Doesn't he look worried that someone might steal it? He hung on very tight.

We then headed to their house in the suburbs with a Landon who did NOT think he needed to spend one more second in his car seat. Luckily it was after his bedtime and he fell asleep after about 30 seconds of vigorous protest. Since then we've been re-organizing our stuff, resting, catching up with friends, and trying to go back through all the to-do list items that have been ignored for two weeks. I'm also listening to my iPod barbri lectures, but have yet to complete the one I started on Friday in the car. I hate that stress is already starting to build for that exam. JP seems to have made a complete recovery from whatever viral syndrome tried to keep him in Illinois and Landon has adjusted much better than expected to all the changes in sleep schedule and location.

It's still completely surreal to be here and realize that it's not just another quick trip before we fly back to Chicago (well, it kind of is, since we're flying back in 10 days for graduation, but only for two days). And even though I lived in Texas for 22 years, and was only gone for 3, I have completely lost my ability to withstand high temperatures. Yesterday we went to church at 11:00 and were standing in the parking lot talking to some old friends. It was 95 degrees and I was melting. I kept looking around at these people all smiley and seemingly comfortable and thinking: you all aren't hot? you're just standing here like this is okay? I am sweating out of every pore of my body, but you're good? really? I can't believe I used to think this was an acceptable temperature- I think my body used to be better at cooling itself down. Until I adjust, we're spending a lot of time indoors and at the community pool.

  1. LL...you crack me up!!! So glad to hear that you're back in Texas with us locals, and that the trip was uneventful. And - just as you predicted - JP's illness was cured by Texas!

  2. This is not an acceptable temperature! Texas forgot May and June this year and went straight for July and August. And as you know, May and June are really nice, but August is what leaves you running inside. Seriously, last week it was too hot for THE POOL. Welcome back! Good luck with the last little bit of moving.

  3. Just some unsolicited assvice about the bar exam, but it was shared with me and I have passed it down for 5 years now.

Go to Barbri (or listen to the lectures as the case may be), do your 50 multistate questions a day, but don't start killing yourself until after July 4th. Studying for the bar is a marathon, not a sprint so pace yourself.

Enjoy that adorable baby in the water, too!

  4. Landon looks so cute!

I'm glad he's enjoying Texas, despite the heat.

  6. Glad you made it safe, and that JP is feeling better! Landon looks super happy in the floaty...we had a crab one last year...don't know what we'll use this year, or what will be BIG enough for him.

I'm sure the heat will grow on you...hey, it's better than the frigid cold, right?! As much as I love MN (born and raised), I'd move to a warmer climate in a heartbeat!

Looking forward to seeing what Texas holds for your little family! Must feel good to be done with law school!!

  7. I felt the same way, even though it was moving back to Northern Cali after living in Southern Cali. 104 degrees...are you kidding me? Well, grandparents that babysit for free was worth it for us :)

  8. I preferred PMBR to BarBri for listening and learning. I failed when I did BarBri and waited until the 4th of July to hit it hard and passed listening to PMBR for months while I drove 3 hours a day.

I'd love to share that tortilla with Landon! It looks tastee!

  9. Delurking to say welcome home to Texas. I'm sure the 95+ degree temps (along with the humidity) was enough for you to say a few choice words - I've said some myself and I've lived here my whole life. Have a couple more margaritas (and if you are ever here in Ft. Worth - have a pitcher of them at Joe T. Garcia's) and you'll feel much better.

  10. Please, post where you bought the cool little floating device Landon is in. I have a 5 month-old and a grandpa with a pool, and that looks like the perfect summer hang-out spot for her!

  11. Hi Anon,

I found it in the One Step Ahead magazine (which I love) but actually ordered it on amazon because it was cheaper.

I loved it because you only have to blow up those two little rings around the baby and the canopy can be attached at either end to block the sun from all angles. And after you're done using it, you just deflate the little rings and then fold it back into a little circle. It worked out great!

  13. Isn't it crazy how our bodies adjust to different temperatures? I finally got used to the heat during two years in a warm climate, and now back in Michigan (which I was always relatively fine with) I think I'll be wearing sweaters until August...

  14. Glad to hear you made it to Texas safely! It's funny you mention the heat - people were just asking how I survived in such hot, humid weather growing up. I told them that I didn't really notice it until I left for school and came back to visit. Good luck settling in!

  15. He is totally growing up! It's amazing how fast he went from being a little baby to, well, almost a kid. But he still has those huge, gorgeous eyes... lucky boy!

  16. uh, it's in the 90's in Chicago right now...so be prepared to continue melting. :)

although after living here in VA for 8 years, if I go back to Chicago in the winter, I am absolutely miserable...all that thin southern blood I acquired. :)
