Present Progression

Last night we opened a few presents that had arrived in the mail from my aunt and uncle in Philadelphia. We're struggling with the logistics of getting JP, me, a Landon and his giant car seat, two big dogs that take up the entire back of the SUV, our suitcases, many accessories, and presents (to both give and receive) into my Explorer and on the road to Houston, so I think this year is going to be a series of mini Christmases. And given Landon's attention span, that's probably the best way to go anyway.

I had just gotten home from work and was excited to open a gift with the little guy because I thought he'd love pulling off the paper. I was wrong:

Nooooooo. Why did you take the pretty paper off? Nooooooooooo.

Hmmm, where'd that come from?

I am intrigued.

It is mine.

So we made progress! And when it was time to open his present, he ripped the paper off like a champ. I have a feeling we're going to have to repeat this little lesson tomorrow night.

  1. Hee! I love that toddlers can do that--shift from one emotion to another in a split second. I am sure it can be frustrating as a parent, but for me as an aunt or cousin, it's usually adorable to watch.

  7. My oldest is developmentally delayed and a little autistic and never really picked up on the concept of Christmas for quite a while. Although at 15, she now has it big-time.

I remember one Christmas when she was about 3 or 4. Despite the tree, the decorations and the hustle and bustle, she had no idea it was Christmas morning or even what that meant. I sat her down by the tree and opened her first present for her. She couldn't say her own name at the time, so this is what came out out ... "Oh, sica". I tried to show her how to open the second one. "Sica, oh sica!" with more excitement. Repeated with even more wonderment as I helped her open each gift.

She may not have known what it was all about but clearly thought it was a very good idea. I can't capture her tone, her voice for you but it was priceless. I will never forget it.

  8. A series of mini Christmases is definitely the best way to go.

Too many presents at once are overwhelming anyway.

We had our family Xmas on Sunday, and I'm wearing my cool T shirt from my sister as I type (I saved to wear it until Christmas morning).

Happy Christmas from New Zealand (where we're 9 hours into Christmas day already!)

  9. We are doing the same thing with breaking Peach into presents - it's been one each night all week. She's still not quite sure about the whole thing, but it's nice to actually see her play with all of the toys!

  13. Hilarious -- I love the first picture with him yelling!

K was really into present-opening this year. Much more fun than last year, when he didn't understand what was going on and kept getting bored.

  14. Merry Christmas!

I'm glad to hear that Landon came around in the present department--that first picture cracked me up. :)
Cooper would just get angry because he wanted to play with the item he just unwrapped and wasn't interested in unwrapping gift after gift. Thankfully Gavin was more than happy to open his AND Cooper's gifts.
