Reentry to Reality: An Update before the Travel Blogging Begins

We are back from our Utah/Arizona National Park Road Trip and it was INCREDIBLE.
We hiked more than 30 miles, drove more than 3,000 miles, and spent 12 days together in 6 different lodgings and I feel restored and happy and so freaking in love with this little family of mine.
I did not bring my work (or personal!) computer or turn on my work phone and I needed that respite more than I even imagined. I was simply present- present and happy and reconnecting with James and the kids in a way I didn't realize I'd stopped doing at home/my office.
I have so much to share, I hardly know where to begin. So instead I'm going to jump to the present, include my menu for the next two weeks because I need it written down somewhere I can access from my phone, and then we'll go backwards with the itinerary in my next post. It was just so wonderful you guys, I don't want to forget a thing.
We got back yesterday about 3 (it was supposed to be 1, but we woke up 2 hours later than planned in our Amarillo hotel room - we were TIRED!) and jumped right into unpacking, laundry, and taking Claire to her Meet the Teacher night for 6th grade. Our new middle schooler is a little nervous and a LOT excited and I'm excited I can be more of the latter and less of the former now that our superintendent announced our district will defy our idiot governor's "no mask mandates allowed even if you think it's best for your area because we are in crisis and borrowing resources from neighboring states and there are no PICU beds available in all of North Texas" and require masks for all students, faculty, and staff on our campuses.
Cora's Meet the Teacher night is tonight and then I guess our resident 8th grader just shows up on Monday like the pro he (thinks he) is.
I bought backpacks and uniforms before we left, so we're in pretty good shape. We're continuing our tradition of my mom's spaghetti the night before school starts and letting each kid pick a meal during the first week. And on every other night we're having some variety of salad because that's all I crave when we get back from a trip.
Oh! In other extremely exciting news, my baby brother and favorite sister-in-law had their twins!! My sister-in-law's birthday is July 25th, my brother's birthday is July 26th (same year as her, though many countries apart- how crazy is that), and the twins were born on July 27th!! I'm expecting huge annual parties in late July.
They were born at 35 weeks weighing 5 lbs. 5 oz. and 5 lbs. 9 oz. They've spent some time in the NICU, but Wade (my very first/only nephew) is home and doing great and Zoe is expected to follow in a few more days. We're so thrilled for them and can't wait to love on them soon.
In the days before we left on our big trip, I had two cases filed and one quick work trip to New York. It was very exciting and rewarding and the perfect send-off before our much-anticipated vacation.
We went out to dinner as a family when I got back to thank my junior paralegal support team and senior partner. In nearly 18 months of working from home, I've brought 4 cases before the Commission, and had one investigation require nearly non-stop work that dominated ALL our lives.
James has been locked out of his bedroom dozens of times for my witness interviews and the kids have been kindly (and not so kindly) cut off from conversations and kicked out of the room for calls. I’ve had countless Starbucks cups and plates of homemade dinner delivered to my desk, along with flowers, cards, and endless understanding for my typing late at night a mere 3 feet from James’s (sort of) sleeping head. I have been stressed and short and completely distracted and they have loved me through it all.
I'm sure the pizza totally made it worth it.
And finally, quick pet update. Maggie went to live with my best friend and her dog pack down the street. My friend ended up fostering two baby pygmy goats that require regular bottle feeding and Maggie LOVED them and checked in on them anytime she woke up from one of her naps. When I went to pick her up yesterday, she was very excited to see me, but ran back inside when I tried to walk her out because she was confused her dog/goat pack wasn't coming too. We'll go visit often.
The cats were given free reign of the house with daily check-ins by my friend's teenage daughter. When we got home, Milo ran over to be held and loved on by everyone and slept with the kids last night (kids who, even after 12 days away together sleeping in one room, all still slept together in the girls' room with Landon on the much-less-comfortable-than-his-real-bed-trundle, they crack me up). Moose on the other hand hid under our bed until he was sure he knew us and/or we seemed like nice new owners. He has yet to forgive us fully for leaving, but did jump up on the couch with me last night and allow me to pet his head a few times.
And now, food! While I go through our pictures and try to write up the last two weeks of sweaty, smiley, amazing good times!

Fri: Honey Mustard Chicken Chopped Salad
Sat: Summer Chipotle Chicken Cobb Salad with Cilantro Vinaigrette
Sun: Back to School with Gigi's Spaghetti, House Salad, Garlic Bread
Mon: Roasted Sausage and Vegetables, Parmesan Orzo
Tues: (Cora's pick) Chicken Verde Enchiladas, Mexican Rice, Black Beans, Frozen Mixed Veggies
Wed: (Claire's pick) Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Thurs: (Landon's pick) Pancakes, Turkey Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Fresh Fruit
Fri: Homemade Pizza
Sat: Rainbow Chicken Salad
Sun: Greek Pasta Salad
Mon: Sunshine Lentil Bowls with Garlic Olive Oil Dressing
Tues: Beef & Bean Taquitos (I make this up with cooked beef, taco seasoning, and refried beans, rolled into tortillas, and then crisped up after rolling), mixed veggies, rice
Wed: Summer Chicken Soup
Thurs: Spaghetti Alfredo with Prosciutto and Peas (generally based on this recipe, I first dice up some prosciutto and crisp it up and set aside, then I make the alfredo sauce while cooking the pasta and adding frozen peas to the last 2 minutes of the pasta cook time. I drain the pasta with the peas and add it all to the alfredo with the crisped prisciutto. It is so good.)
Fri & Sat: Houston!
Sun: Turkey Chili

More to come as soon as I can pull the pictures and words together!!

Rescue Pets: Inaugural Team Meeting

Moose: I now call this meeting to order.

Milo: I was told there would be snacks?

Maggie: [Deaf, but somehow understands her presence is expected and happy as always to be included.]

Moose: The humans have changed our kibbles and I would like to lodge a complaint.

Milo: Kibbles? Where?

Maggie: Everything is so great and I'm so glad the cats think so too.

Moose: In terms of retribution, I'm currently glaring at the head human whenever I'm near my bowl. What steps are you taking?

Milo: Sometimes I try to nap and eat at the same time.

Maggie: I love naps and also eating.

Moose: Next, sometimes I grace a human with my presence and then they move before I am ready. I'm currently on day 3 of ignoring one of them for adjusting their legs during my second mid-morning nap. I expect you all to join me.

Milo: I love naps.

Maggie: I love everything.

Moose: Next, sometimes my toy spring goes under the couch and remains there for hours before someone fetches it for me so I can hit it back under again. This process should repeat itself much faster.

Milo: I don't like toys that require running.

Maggie: Do you think I will get cheese again with my dinner?

Moose: Next, the humans trimmed my nails last night, neutralizing my natural weapons. How can I now flay the skin of my enemies?

Milo: My fur is so fluffy.

Maggie: Sometimes I get a piece of cheese with my dinner.

Moose: Next, the new cat keeps taking my favorite nap spot and no one is fixing it.

Milo: Naps!

Maggie: Cheese!

Moose: The revolution begins at dawn.

New Babies and Other Adventures

Hello! As I always seem to say, work and life have been SO busy. Being vaccinated and gently venturing out to things like masked yoga classes whenever I can possibly squeeze one in (group classes are filling my SOUL right now and I have missed them more than I ever even let myself imagine) means that for the 1-2 hours a day I manage to not be working, I'm making dinner, picking up a kid from school or football, or sneaking myself away to yoga.

Calzone night!

I also snuck in my first haircut since June 1st last year!
And then, this past Sunday, I snuck myself all the way away to Boulder to visit my sister on her maternity leave!
For 3 days I got to snuggle my sweet baby Sage, love on my other two nieces, sister, and brother-in-law, cook great food, watch musicals and chick flicks, and even do some yoga!
My sister's family has grown to include a small petting zoo of chickens, goats, and a large family of wild bunnies that live in her front yard (you can't actually pet the bunnies, but they really add to the ambience when you look out the window).
Our yoga turned into accidental goat yoga, and being in Boulder, it felt quite appropriate to be doing something so hipster-adjacent.
We made homemade pasties and pizzas, grilled chicken schwarma, and the most delicious fancy salad for lunch.
We even left the house for an hour to become temporary Ladies Who Brunch while Sage snoozed peacefully beside us.
It was the most wonderful few days of pretend maternity leave. These visits are so special to me - to get to spend time with my adult sister and her babies and family... I need her to have that baby #4 so I can do it one more time!
And while I was there Landon had his last football game! And after freezing my way through games in the stands where he had about 20 seconds of playing time (though he had fun and learned a lot about the game and we were super glad he left his comfort zone to try it!), he closed out his last game as the first string running back, carrying the ball many times for many yards and then SCORED A TOUCHDOWN!!
You guys. James sent me this video with "touchdown!" in the text. I assumed he just meant the team - which was exciting, we'd only scored 3 all season, but then I actually watched it (I hate watching videos, I don't know why; just send me something I can read without the sound on) and you guys, it was my #35 making that touchdown!!!

I was clapping and screaming in my sister's kitchen while our pizzas cooked and I fully felt like a football mom. And now it's on to track!
Maggie's ready. She can run very fast over short distances.
I missed her so much while I was gone. If only I could put her in the overhead bin...

Like when I fly to NYC for work next week. First work trip in FOREVER, I had to order a new dress because it's possible some of my old ones don't fit, but this one makes me feel powerful and I love it with my old black blazer and the black heels I hope I remember how to wear. Fingers crossed.
And finally, I'll close with a quick peak at a new baby of our own -- please meet Milo, the 8th member of the Lag Liv family!
Milo is a one-year old Siamese mix and he is as soft and snuggly as he is handsome.
We adopted him on Wednesday from the same sweet foster mama who fostered Moose. We didn't know we needed a second cat until she texted me out of the blue a few weeks ago with a picture of this handsome gentleman and a note that he was her favorite foster cat she'd ever had and she really thought he needed to live with us and she wouldn't adopt him to anyone else. Next thing you know I had named him Milo and was deep into "proper cat introduction" research.
Moose and Milo are already best friends, chasing each other around the house, standing up tall like big bears and then scampering off again. You can tell Moose had really been missing someone who could keep up with him.
And while Maggie has maybe not yet noticed another cat lives in this house, I have no doubt she'll be delighted to find herself the lowest ranking member of a resident cat pack.
I can't wait to tell you more of the adventures of Moose, Maggie, and Milo too.

Oh and one more thing! I'm going back to teaching!! I start back at the barre at Urban Yoga teaching each Sunday from 1:30-2:30 pm CT starting next Sunday, May 9. It will be a small in-studio class (currently limited to five) and a video streaming option. For those of you I got to teach in the early part of the pandemic, I absolutely loved meeting you and would love to see you again! You can sign up now through the website or Mind Body.
And if that's not your thing, I hope that you have found what makes you feel grounded and happy. Getting back to what works for me has made me realize how very much I missed it and how groundless I felt for portions of this year. I can't wait to be back in the studio. Have a wonderful week!

Mid-August Highs, Literally

It's 111 degrees outside. And that's not an exaggeration, it's actually 111 degrees outside. According to my weather app, it feels like 118, and according to my body, it feels like the air is made of fire. Hello August, you're always my least favorite month.

WTF

Usually the month is made better by our family vacation (always taken in the late summer swim school slow down), school supply shopping (my fave), and the always thrilling first day of school. Since none of those things are happening, it's mostly just me working in the bedroom, everyone sweating all the time, and the kids negotiating with James and I over how long either one of us will sit outside to watch them swim. Fun!

Though of course there are moments of great fun. James gives the kids a creative writing assignment every morning. Some of his prompts have been "who would win in a fight between paper and rock and why?", "invent a new candy, give it a name, explain how it's made, packaged, etc.", "invent a new word, explain its meaning and why it needs to be added to the dictionary." He's such a good at-home summer camp counselor, I just mostly make them clean stuff. Anyway, one prompt last week was to invent a new game, explain the layout, rules, how you win, etc.

The kids read their prompts at dinner each night. They take them very seriously and it's become a very important part of the day. I feel like we've learned some new and interesting things about each of them along the way.

Cora likes to create visuals and exhibits to her prompts. For the game night prompt she had worked for much of the afternoon cutting little strips of paper, writing of them, and placing them into a plastic bin she found. She placed all her components under her chair to await their dinner-time unveiling.

When it was her turn, Cora told us about a game called "Guess The Thing." To play Guess The Thing, you take a piece of paper from a bin, open it, and try to act out the thing written on the paper so other people can guess.

Oh yes, she invented charades. Probably stolen from a scene in Frozen 2, she didn't know it was really a game and definitely didn't know it had a name, though we all call it Guess The Thing now.

And so we played, and you guys, I CANNOT recommend Charades/Guess The Thing more highly with children. I hadn't played since my high school youth group days, and had kind of forgotten about it, but there's a reason Guess The Thing has been around forever. The kids LOVED IT and James and I had so much fun playing too. Like a drawing room in Victorian England, we were giggling away and the kids' acting styles were hilarious and often very unhelpful (they generally chose to become the object rather than show how the object is used; like becoming a water bottle, rather than pretending to drink from one), but the best part was all the "Things" Cora had written on her tiny pieces of paper. It was such insight into her little 6-and-a-half-years-old mind. It was my favorite night in a long time and it will sparkle in my memories of this time.

Other big things that have happened in the last two weeks:

I went to the office for the first time since March. I had to print exhibits for a deposition and so some other necessary items that required me to be on location. As used to be tradition, I grabbed a Starbucks on the way and arrived just before 8 a.m. to walk through an empty lobby.

I was greeted by a stale office with a sadly outdated calendar that reminded me of all the fun things we were supposed to do in March, every single one of which was canceled. What a little time capsule of our former life.

I did my work, embracing the silence and lack of children, and headed home, holding my exhibits and the big book of securities laws from my desk that I've missed near-daily since we'd been separated.

My home office has improved a bit more. James has started painting the walls and ceilings a soft white that contrasts beautifully with my teal accent wall. We also got a new remote for our top row of blinds so they can finally go up again. We lost the remote years ago and really kept thinking it would turn up, but now that I live in our bedroom, and I have to keep the lower windows closed to avoid staring at the swim school families, I really missed the light and trees of the top row. One remote and two service calls later and we're back in business!

We also cleaned our skylights and all the natural light pouring into my bedroomoffice is giving me life.

In the same spirit, I was inspired to dump everything out of our junk drawer in the kitchen and organize it. Every time I open the drawer now I smile. It's the little things.

And then I cleaned out my closet and all my drawers. It was exhausting as I forced myself to try on every single thing, but my drawers now ALSO make me smile and we're all for manifesting things like that.

This week I took my first virtual deposition. It's a brave new world, but thanks to good WiFi, virtual backgrounds, and very cooperative children (and a headset with mic stolen from the youngest child's "virtual school" box), it's one we keep finding new ways to make work. I wore real clothes and packed all my snacks and lunch and didn't move for a very long time.

Afterward I met a friend at a nearby outdoor patio to sit diagonally 6 feet from one another and catch up. Margaritas after depos are a grand tradition and James coaching until 6:30 and the kids never leaving the house couldn't stop me from keeping the streak going. I realized after I arrived that I never told James I'd left. He was coaching and would assume I was still holed away indoors, so I sent him this text to update him.

In other news, finally free from all manner of fungus and worms, Mr. Moose was neutered last week. I'm assuming it was a pretty weird day for him, but his shaved behind is quite fetching and he seems to have forgiven us for taking his testicles.

His favorite place to sleep is the top bunk of the girls' doll bed. Everytime Cora sees him there she covers him with one of the baby blankets. Adopting a kitten was just the best idea.

Maggie, of course, also remains perfect.

She misses our car rides so much that I sometimes make up errands to give her a ride-along.

While working a million hours a day last week I treated myself to a few extra Starbucks runs. The kids and canine accompanied me for one of them.

Maggie is my most stalwart and loyal colleague. Moose flits in and out, but Maggie is always there, snoring loudly beside me.

School has been delayed three more weeks until September 8th. We're virtual only for the first four weeks and I'm here for it. We got Claire her own Chromebook, Cora has my old laptop, and Landon has his middle-school issued computer. Everyone has mouses and headsets with mics. James has pushed all his lessons to afternoon-only and will once again be our schoolmaster. It won't be perfect, and I'll be sad when the original first day of school passes us by, and there will be days when this will be fucking hard and I'll probably cry sometimes and write about my frustrations, but I know to my core that we are so, so lucky to be able to make this work.

In related news, our numbers are going way down. It's almost like opening the whole state without a mask mandate was a really stupid idea and then enacting one in early July was a really good one.

In adapting to this new world, I've learned that the Old Navy kids face masks fit Claire and Cora best, the Target kids masks fit Landon best, James likes the ones my sister in law made, and I like those and the Old Navy adult ones. James has purchased a very large and expensive heater for our backyard pool to keep his lessons going in cooler weather. I'll be working from home until at least January and likely longer.

I remain on the emotional Coronacoaster but am momentarily in a stable place of feeling like this is going to be here a while but it's okay. My coworkers stand ready. Our family is very lucky and we can always play another round of Guess The Thing to remind me of that fact.

Moose thinks we're doing okay too.
