I finally wrote something about law school today and here I am going right back to baby stuff. I have an excuse though- both of my favorite bags (I peruse online stores during class) are on sale and I'm trying to decide if I should buy one now. I am fascinated by diaper bags- I love all fashion accessories and this one will be my constant companion starting in August.
I've been semi-obsessed with this one by Fanci-Free ever since Urban Baby Daily featured it in one of their emails in December. All the reviews I've found on it are very positive, but it is more than I thought I'd be spending. (This would be a summer purchase while I'm on a law firm's payroll.) However, today I saw its 20% off on ebags.com. I've never seen it on sale, which makes me think this is some sort of sign telling me to get out my credit card.
But I found this one in a babycenter email (the content of my inbox has changed so much over the past few months). It looks smaller, but the measurements are 18" x 6" x 13". I like how the Fanci Free bag has a light printed inside, I think it's easier to find stuff, but this bag is quite chic looking for something that's waterproof and will be filled with diapers and bottles.
So for those of you who have been there, are there, or have friends who are there, do you have any thoughts? I want something that looks cute but is very functional. I'd be using this to take the baby to daycare and then during the afternoons, evenings, and weekends when we're hanging out together. How much room does a proper diaper bag need to have? Anything to avoid or that sounds cool but ended up being totally worthless?
You'll want something a bit on the larger side (as opposed to really cute) because babies need a lot of stuff. I lived in a major metropolitan area when my son was born and found I needed about 6-8 diapers, two changes of clothes, several bottles of water and formula canisters, toys, a blanket, wipes, etc., etc., etc. It's a lot. BUT - if you're driving instead of taking the Metro, you can keep spare diapers/wipes/clothes in the boot of your car. You'll probably bring a new pack of diapers to daycare every week. So there are ways around it. The first bag looks really cute. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'd say the plastic changing mat is really helpful but you'll probably chuck the covered bottle holder (you end up switching them out far too often).
I am still looking for a decent diaper bag and my baby just turned 1!
ReplyDeleteMay I add your blog to my page? I'm thinking of blogging bit by bi again.
Hey desimom- absolutely! Let me know if you start up again!
ReplyDeleteBeing able to open the top wider, as the first one seems to allow, will be a key feature. That said, I was a minimalist and carried as little as possible.
ReplyDeleteDo NOT cut back on the spit rags, though. You cannot carry enough of them.
I have to admit, one of the most exciting things we did when we threw our friend a baby shower was buy her a sexy diaper bag. I know it sounds silly, but it was so important to help her feel like she could be mom and killer law clerk extraordinaire at the same time. I'll look up the one we got her, as I know she liked it - she blogged about it here, but doesn't mention the name (http://thdw.blogspot.com/2006/10/36-weeks-part-deux.html)
